wrist radius commuinted distal fracture surgery?

i just had surgery 8/21/08 6 screws, plate and two pins in r wrist communited radial fracture distal. pins are in wrist joint. pins come out some point. i move fingers, can feel pull down toward wrist and down front of hand on middle finger. pinky feels nerve on side, sort of tight. thumb not easy on own but manipulate some to bend joint. can feel pull down toward incision. can movement harm recovery? md on 9/02 to get xray and stitches out. what ques i should present especially re mobility and step by step recovery. md not a talker. thanks. can i write in as i go along? left hand not strong so sort of needing right back. when do people get back to gym? any complications w plate scews in body?

Usually people with screws, pins, plates, etc don't even notice that they are there, once healing has begun. You need to ask doc about some PT for your hand after you describe your limited motion. Part of the motion limit is swelling and bone callus buildup as the bone starts to heal. Once the bone healing is done, the bone callus will go away, leaving more room.
The PT can answer alot of questions as to how to know when you can start going back to the gym to work out- it depends on your workout program.. If you lift heavy, likely as not you will need to drop the weight for awhile and start by building up reps with much lighter weight, doing higher reps for toning.
Whatever your workout is, make a list of questions and take it with you- any question about increasing mobility, PT, physical workouts. He may not be a talker, but if you have the list with you, you can remember exactly what you want answered.
Sometimes the screws can work their way loose and will need to be removed the rest of the way by a short surgery. That's about the only side effect of plates and screws.
Since it was a comminuted distal fracture, it's going to take more time to heal than a straight forward break, so don't get impatient with the way it's healing- it took a lot to break it and it takes a lot to heal it.
Good luck with your tight lipped doc.
