85 t/a with tpi heads, is there 4bbl intake for them? how to find out 305 or 350ci?

i have a torn apart project 85 t/a believe to be 305 tbi, but motor and heads look replaced. the Tpi IS Disassembled, as well no exhaust manifolds. so how do i decode this motor and heads. to be 305, or 305 ho, or 350, i never work on GM, nor fuel injected anything. heads are rebuilt i was told.
i might be getting a 74 350, and he don't know anything about the motor, and i question the compression ratio of them days, i like to go 4bbl set up and like to get wisdom. use the tpi heads on the older 350 do=able? yet, about the 4bbl intake, just any fit?
since i don't have exhaust manifolds on the car, nor head pipes there..so suggestion of affordable headers, seen a bunch on ebay. varies of stainless steel shorty..to long length.
did the GTA firebird came with tri y headers? where to buy aftermarket tri y headers? if such exist. might misunderstood..thanks.
any website to build stronger 305, as well 350...how to decode sbc, heads, ect.
would be useful as well.

First off - the web site. Go to ThirdGen.org - its the best place for anything third gen Camaro or Firebird. TPI/TBI engines are covered in detail there. Lots of free, great advice there specifically from the guys who drive third gens.

Regarding the engine, look at the boss on the block in front of the passenger side head - there's a number there - check that out. Additionally, you should be able to pull the engine block code off the rear of the block - you may need to clean the gunk off to find these numbers. You should be able to decode the engine from those pretty well. If its the stock block, you could only get 305's in the 85 t/a.

A four barrel intake will fit a mid-eighties small block without issue - you can spec out an Edelbrock Performer intake for that car and top if off with a good 4 barrel (I do recommend a good performance built Quadrajet for the street - no need to go too crazy with the carb if you're keeping things relatively mild-to-mid performance. However, you should consider keeping the fuel injection for a couple reasons - first, it keeps the car emissions-legal. Second, fuel injection can work very well in the car. TPI/TBI is a little restrictive, but you can make it perform very well with the right mods (check the third gen guys on this - they'll give you good advice on those forums).

Regarding headers, don't skimp out, and don't go generic. There's fitment issues with the steering rack on these cars with some of the heads, and the cheapie headers generally have cheapie flanges - meaning they'll be guaranteed to leak. On my fourth gen Camaro Z28 I run BBK's, and I have a set of Pacesetter long tubes on my second gen Z28. The BBK's fit like a glove out of the box, while the Pacesetters are a complete custom exhaust. However the finish on both are excellent. Tri y's? Forget 'em. Unless you're going for a full-on hairy motor, your money is best spent on a good flowing set of regular quality headers that fits your car. Spend the money you save on a much hotter camshaft and lifters.
