putting a header in block (wood or steel lintel)(repost)?

i'm adding on a master bath to our house, and have to open up our bedroom into it. the wall to be opened is 4x8x16 block. there will be 6' wide french doors installed in the opening. i know to support the ceiling before i do anything. there is a 3' wide window there that i will be removing, as well as it's steel lintel. what is the best way to support the new opening? should i buy another stell lintel, or just go will my double 4x8 headers? if i do choose steel, do i need to morter it to the bricks? if i choose wood header, does it need to fasten to the block above it, or can the block just rest on it? anyone ever do this before?

You need to replace the steel lintel to support the masonry; any lumber to be supported may or may not require a lumber header. That depends on how the existing wood framing is supported.

The International Residential Code (IRC) addresses lintel spans for masonry veneer in Section R703.7.3 & Table R703.7.3., and states that lintels are required for support of masonry over openings in R606.9. For a block wall, you should consult an architect or structural engineer to size the lintel properly. The lintel must be a minimum of 24" longer than the opening - this provides 12" of bearing surface on each side of the span.

Wood header spans for exterior load bearing walls can be found in IRC Table R502.5(1). The requirements are based on the span, the type of load supported, and the overall width of the building. Since you did not include any of that info; consult the Table.
