I have a 1999 jeep cherokee with a 4.0L what are some thing I can do to give it more power?
what are some things i can do to give it more power, cold air intake, throttlebody spacer, plugs, headers ? what should i do?
this engine is amazing.
yeah, there is a lot you can do to it.
start with a K&N cold air kit, or at least an air filter.
then also get a throttle body vortex spacer. also, you can buy a bored out throttle body. these aren't cheap but it makes sense. more air in, more power out. you'll have to adjust the fuel mixture though. these are easy to install and relatively inexpensive.
on my jeep i installed a cat back exhaust too. i like flowmasters. actually i like them a lot. i installed one on my wrangler (i think it was the 40) and it's loud and rawkus! but then again, i think that's cool. you have so many options. just getting a better muffler makes a huge difference. all of that "straight pipe" stuff is sort of fluff to me. also, get a header on it. i used a borla when they were more affordable. you 'll have lots of choices in these as well. i'm telling you with all of those things combined it really makes a difference. your 4.0 will be a screamer.
in addition, i have heard some people install a replacement computer chips to change the spark and timing some. i understand that they make a difference, but i can't testify to that.
there are some other options too depending on your budget. for example, a new coil, like a MSD or jacobs. get new plugs and wires if you do this. and you can also get new pullies for the belts and accessories. lastly, i know edlebrock makes an intake manifold too, but in my opinion, this is a luxury and changing the intake is one of the last things i would do.
all of the things you listed are good options and they are safe external modifications to get a lot more power and more importantly, torque. if you want to get serious, and spend some money, try changing out the cam shaft, and thus, the timing. you can then do other things to beefen up the block internally, like roller rockers on the camshaft too. i don't know of anyone who makes domed pistons for this engine but i'm sure someone does.
and if you really, really, really want to get expensive, try trading your block for the newer bored out 4.6L ones. combine all of these other modifications to it along with a supercharger and you will have one of the most awesome forces on the planet.
needless to say, i love the jeep 4.0 block. it's a sad thing to see it go. i hope you have some fun with yours. best of luck to you. really. i have had my wrangler 20 years.

don't mind that most of what's available is for the wrangler. a lot of what is available for it is also available for the cherokee. but be careful. obviously, some things aren't compatible, like headers, cat backs, and the like.
