I have an 86.5 Nissan D21 PU, Z24 eng.. Replaced the head and head gasket.?
Idles rough, almost choking out. opening the intake a bit seems to somewhat improve but not great. Checked the coils and only 1 is firing. Reversed them and coils seem to be ok but only 1 is firing. Need advise on which is intake and which is exhaust. Also need advice on checking the distributor and crank angle sensor.
The truck has been sitting due to overheating and finding time to fix. Replaced the head and gaskets. The truck is still overheating. No leaks, oil is clean. Took the Thermostat out to eliminate it as a suspect. checked timing and it seems to be ok even with the rough idle. Fan is working. Radiator does not leak. Have not done a pressure test on the radiator.
Any suggestions ?
Two things come to mind. There are two types of fans for the 85 PU mechanical or electrical If your PU has the mechanical Fan, The Fan clutch could be bad or the radiator could be restricted. When you rev the truck up, does the fan blow a lot of air back over the engine or does it just slowly spin? If the fan is pulling/blowing lots of air, or you have the electrical version, then you should have the radiator flow tested.
