Complete Car Upgrade?
I just bought a brand new 2008 Dodge Avenger (black). I am 16 years old in high school and I want the best car around. I was given $5,000 dollars to spend upgrading it. I want chrome rims and an excellent audio system along with other things. If you could give me your opinions on what I should get for my car, it would be greatly appreciated.
Alot of this stuff is up to your preference. Choices are wide open, but you are kinda on a budget. Do your footwork and look around at prices and styles online and around your town. Don't jump head first into wheels or anything without having a definate knowledge about the prices and products on the market.
I have a scion tc that I have done alot of things to. I have found out through looking that when it comes to wheels you want to stay away from the odd size rims. The 17" 19" 21" all run higher price especially in tires. I got my ICW 20" rims for $175 a piece. The tires run $125 a piece. There is $1200 then mounting and balancing.
You also want to look at the treadwear number. It is a good thing to look at. My first set was Nitto Gen's. They had a 280 wear rating. I have General Tire same size and have a 380 rating. Already I can tell a differance about how the tires are wearing and are gonna outlast the Nitto's. Nitto's only lasted 1 year and a month or so. By the way, that wear rating is also on any tire, stock sizes or performance; I can hang the TC around the same curve at same speed or better and never squeal a tire.
Body Kits are good, but if you are gonna lower it then they are more of a pain for driving and upkeep. My scion is lowered 2 1/2" all around. The stock bumper scrapes just going into Auto Zone at idle. With a body kit it would take the nose off the car. Dropping your car adds good tune to drivability, though if you drop it, you need to beef the sway bar first. Remember your tires will be closer to your fenders and if it rolls much the fender will be into the tire.
The only Camber kits that are any good are for the rear suspension. The "BOLTS" they sell for the front are a bunch of crap. My Scion has (2) almost 1" diameter bolts in each strut, those camber bolt kits come with a bolt about 3/8" diameter. Tell me you want to drive 130mph with that much less metel on each wheel; BS... I have widened the holes in the strut mounting holes, to look kinda egg shaped, in order to get the top of the wheel to go outwards to achieve proper camber. They will point inward at the top if you don't do such. Luckily the TC has a rear camber adjustment for both wheels. You could check on your Avenger, look at the brace that mounts to the top of the spindle on the rear wheels, follow that brace back and see where it mounts, to the frame, there might be a disk or bolt that has a coin looking device that allows the brace to pivot out and back in to push and pull the top of the tire. If not I just seen a rear camber adjustment kit for $85 on ebay, look up "Dodge Avenger Camber" and you will see the one for the front and the rear. You will see what I mean about the bolts for the front and also the device I am talking about for the rear.
Engine wise Cold Air Intakes are great and don't throw the check engine light. Don't do the "shorty" that just takes hot air from the engine compartment and defeats the whole idea.
Headers are kewel, but only look good for 3 years max. Also most headers throw a Check Engine Light. If you like doing work yourself like I do, I take my header off every inspection month to replace my stock manifold with converter built on. You must disconnect your battery cable for 2 minutes after reinstalling your manifold to reset the CEL. Then drive it about 75 miles for it to retest the system before inspection, or it won't be ready.
Then comes Turbo's and supercharger's. Not sure about the Avenger but Scion has been very scetchy about success and failure of forced injection. Alot has to do with how the people drive I guess, but also every engine on the road has a weak link somewhere. How you find it, well normally not by driving to Burger King and blowing the top end off waiting for your Whopper.
Yahoo Groups has alot of Groups that if you search them out have people working on Avengers. You can get alot of hands on wisdom and maybe learn how to do your own work on yours. That is the key, these things are gonna cost money, plus the labor to do them. Why pay $3000 in labor to install $1500 worth of parts. Remember the rule, Lefty loosey, Righty tighty...
For sound, I would deal with the stock speakers for surround sound appeal for a cheap price, but with your trunk you can mount 2 -15" subs and have plenty of bass. Alot of people hate Kicker, but they make just as much bass with half of the Watts that other 15's take. Just my opinion. I like my Sirus radio, kinda pricey at $400 for 3 years, but I have gotten plenty of entertainment in the last 1 1/2 years. They have richer sound than most CD's also.
This probally didn't help much, but hope you got some insight as to what you might want to do or not.
