Does 32 and 64 bit Windows affect Dual or Quad Core Processors?

I have researched and found that I want a quad core processor. I also want 32 bit windows because of the software compatibility.

Can quad core processors only be used with 64 bit?

Does XP or Vista change this view either?

Quad core processors can be used for pretty much any OS (64-32 bit)

64 bit also have more compatibility due to the fact thy can run almost any 32 bit program.

with research u can figure out compatibility issues anyway.

I would suggest not switching OSs til Windows 7 comes out though.
