Air cooled VW heat risers?

So my exhaust has one hole on each side for the heat risers to the intake manifold. The motor I just put in from a newer Super Beetle is a dual port, and has two holes per side. I live in a fairly warm all year round area in California so I don't really need the heat risers anyway. My question is can I just take a sawsall or something similar to the risers going into the intake manifold and leave them open so I can fit block off plates onto the exhaust so my car doesn't spit exhaust into the engine bay, or will that cause a vacuum leak and require me to block them off as well?

I know what you mean. The proper way of course would be to get the proper heater boxes to match the heat risers.But who wants to sift through a junkyard, and go through all that work replacing the heater boxes? I would rather do exactly what you mentioned above. California doesn't get cold like Germany does. They were designed for the German weather. The heat risers are separated from the intake manifold.
