Can you take a VW bug engine and make it a pull start for a dune buggy?

Is it possible? I've been riding in sand rails now and they have less horsepower than the old vw bug engines, but they are pull starts with kill switches. I figured this would be great because you take out the battery and lose the starter. Sure, you have to pull start, but its less weight. When you're in the dunes, I just feel like more things could go wrong with a starter, but I'm sure everyone has their own opinion on that. Can a pull start system be crafted? Thanks for everyone's input.
Yes, there used to be aftermarket companys that make pull starts for for vw engines. That said there collectors items today and no long made(nor have been for 30-40 years) so it'll take you some time and money to find one. As well a more common(as in made by vw) would be a crank start, which the crank nuts pop up on ebay all the time for about ($10-20), but never seen the crank for sale(not that a machine shop couldn't make one up) Now all that said if you running a vw tranny why not just hit up the junkyards for a used starter, be cheaper and much easier than tring to kick it over by hand.
