My mom's house smells musty. What are some causes?
It's the house I grew up in, a ranch on a crawl space. It never smelled that way years ago. Possibilities: No exhaust fan in bathroom. They had trees close to the house for a while. Wallpaper everywhere. Blown-in insulation in attic made from ground up newspapers. It seems like they were having trouble with a damp attic a long time ago but now have added ventilation. My mom wants to sell the house (dad died). How can we get rid of the odor? It's mostly in the bed and bath area.
We once had a house that had that smell. We had to replace the bathtub and found the plywood was rotting under the tub. So we replaced the plywood the smell went away. With no exhaust fan in the bathroom it's very likely something like that might be the cause.
