Why are intake/exhaust valve heads always circular?
Hi,
There's probably a really simple answer to this question, but I'm not seeing it, so I'll fire away here.
Why is it that all engine intake/exhaust valves heads are circular? Surely you would get a larger area by using a single lamina valve head (perhaps with several stems needed for strength) for intake, mirrored for the exhaust, than you would by using multiple circular headed valves as is done currently?
Thanks,

Largest surface area and also valves rotate while they operate in fact some engines have caps on top of the valve stems to help this happen(transit diesel).this stops them forming a flat spot on the sealing face.Transmissions use the same idea in that differential gearing always has one of it members having a prime number of teeth so flatting and "gear drumming" doesn't happen. If the stems don't have a rotator cap they align the rocker arm or profile the cam lobe so that it turns the valve slightly on each opening
