When tie dying can the dye stay on the shirt for more than 24 hours as long as it is in the zip lock bag?
HELP!!! I tie dyed with my middle schoolers on Friday and we zipped them up to set... can they stay setting for 48 hours or until Monday??? Or should I go up on Sunday and rinse them. (which I do NOT want to do, but will). I do not want to ruin their shirts after working hard on them. Thanks in advance for any shared knowledge.
There is no problem at all with leaving tie-dyed items in the bags for two or three days, because the soda ash will prevent any mold from growing.
Assuming that you used a good tie-dye kit, or any other good fiber reactive dye, giving the shirts more time than necessary to set is a good thing. The excess unattached dye will react with the moisture, so none is left to permanently attach to the wrong part of the shirts. This means that it is safe to drop all of the shirts into a single washing machine load (or as many as will fit), without fear of color transfer from a dark shirt to a light one. Wash once in cool water, then twice in HOT water (140° or hotter) to remove all excess unattached dye. You can wash by hand, too, first in cool water and then in the hottest water available, but the washing machine method is perfectly safe and is preferable if you have access to one.
If you used Rit dye, the dye will mostly wash out, because all-purpose dye is not suitable for that style of dyeing. Always use fiber reactive dye, such as Procion MX dye, when doing multi-color tie-dye.
