1990 F-150 302 running extremely rough?
Running very rough and started to knock; pulled the dipstick and noted 1 pint to 1 quart overfull, strong smell of gas on the dipstick, drained 2 oz from the oilpan and it smells very strong of gas.
Somebody told me it could be a diaphragm gone on the fuel pump & putting gas directly into the crankcase. But someone else said the fuel pump(s) on that vehicle (XLT Lariat, dual tanks) is in the gas tank(s) so that couldn't be the problem. Any thoughts on what this could be? As a sidenote when it first started running poorly I took it to a garage that said it had a fail code on some sensor that operates a valve that circulates exhaust back into the engine at high RPMs as an emissions control thing. They checked the valve and said it looked fine and advised against replacing the sensor until the problem got worse. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

well, first off, change your oil. ASAP - you do have fuel in your crankcase, every time you try to start your engine, that fuel circulates around the engine, drying out all those parts - dry parts - metal on metal wear.
Now ... how that fuel got in there. Cold starts in the morning can "Wash" the cylinders with fuel - the more you try to crank, the more fuel gets in there, the more wear on the cylinders, the harder the start ...etc (you get the idea I'm sure)
I'd recommend a full tuneup, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, and air filter if needed, and set the timing. 10 degrees before top dead center on that engine (getting the computer to stop controlling the timing is done by pulling the little "spout" connector on the distributor - it's two wires that go to a dead end plug) Once you've gotten it up to normal working condition, look at the emissions parts. the EGR valve (the thing that recirculates exhaust emissions to the cylinders) is there for more than just high RPM's - it's used under light throttle, light load, usually cruising at highway speeds, it introduces incombustible gasses into the cylinders to help cool them, this in turn reduces your "nitrates per oxide" emissions, a faulty EGR valve, or sensors can hang the valve open all the time, causing these hard starts, and poor running conditions.
Now, once it's tuned up, look at the fuel system - I'd guess that the fuel pressure regulator is stuck shut, causing excess pressure in the fuel rail, thus adding more fuel to the cylinders, creating this rough running condition, and even washing the cylinders (that I pointed out before) causing more issues with your engine.
It's an old truck, but with proper care, it should run forever.
