I have a 1992 civic hatch there is black stuff on the car after i drive coming from the exhaust can you tell?
what might be the problem i don't think its carbon build up cause i have been running good for the last two weeks of so thanks in advance
One of 2 items.
A problem with the fuel system that is delivering too much fuel to the engine, running too rich. The black soot will be from the dirty exhaust of a poorly running engine. If it is a fuel problem there will be a noticeable increase in fuel consumption. You may simply need a good tune-up. You may have a bad sensor.
Also, if the engine is allowed to run too rich for any amount of time, it will destroy the catalytic converter. The excess fuel in the exhaust would burn in the catalytic converter causing it to over heat. The inside if the catalitic converter could melt and become blocked. This causes a whole new set of issues.
The other possibility is that your old car is starting to burn oil. Common in an old vehicle. The engine is simply getting worn out. The black soot is from the engine burning oil. The only fix for this is an engine overhaul. Watch your oil level. If you are using more than 1 quart per 1000 miles you have an oil burning problem.
If you find that this is from excessive oil consumption, you may want to do nothing. You may find it not worth your while to spend thousands of dollars repairing an engine in a car nearly 18 years old. I would simply enjoy the car as is and deal with the oil consumption. Just make sure you never allow the oil level to get too low. However if you live in a location that requires emissions testing this may not be possible.
