why does my truck get worse mpg after i installed a free flowing aftermarket cat back exhaust?
i have been told that backpressure on an engine robs power causing the engine to work harder to push out exhuast gases. so if this is true then why did my truck get worse mpg when i installed a free flowing aftermarket cat back exhaust system? it was a generic flowmaster muffler called mellotone that is single inlet with dual outlet ran out the back of the truck. Before the install with stock exhaust i got 15+ mpg, with the cat back exhaust i now get 13 and my driving habits have not changed i have had a watchful eye beieng kept on me by my wife to tell me this. also my truck is a 99 f150 4x4 with a 5.4 triton V8 with a K and N air filter which was installed months before the exhaust.
any performance parts, exhaust included very rarely increases fuel milage....and....back pressure does other things besides robbing horse power in fact its an intricate part to help increase horsepower.....unless your engines highly modified...sometimes just changing pipe sizes will cost u fuel mileage..but to the exhaust issue...we install after market exhausts all the time...most of the time the cheaper systems are not designed to increase fuel mileage or power ..they may sound better than the stock exhaust but chances are u have less horse power now than before....and as u know worse gas mileage...this is a common complaint after we install some of the systems.....the more expensive systems have far more testing done on them for these areas than other systems....we have had no complaints on borla or flowmaster complete systems...if u lay systems out side by side and compare them you can see lots of difference in pipe bends...sizes ...and muffler layout..all have a effect on h/p and mileage...u can try a different type of muffler and maybe get those miles back up where you want them....or buy a programmer ....this will help with the mpg issue to,.without any more exhaust work...(before u get mad at me ..i have no experience with melotone exhaust products ..so I'm not knocking them...i can only say that i have 35 years worth of custom exhaust experience)..good luck
