Volkswagen Reliability for 2 cars?

I was looking at 2 veedubs, the Passat and the Corrado, and I wanted to know, how reliable are they? My ideal car would be the Passat ranging from 1995 - 2003 and the Corrado which would have the VR6 engine. Thanks.

The Corrado was never very popular (at least in the San Francisco Bay Area where I've been) in comparison to the Passat; having said that, in my dealership experience, the Corrado with the VR6 motor was far more reliable than the Passat has ever been.

The VR6 motor is one tough piece of metal; its largest short comings are the replacement costs of the timing chains and some motor mount weakness, but compared to the issues with the Passat; automatic temperature control (heater/ac system), various electrical issues with cruise control, check engine lights, automatic transmission issues (though these also happen somewhat less with a Corrado), front end steering linkage weakness (tie rod ends weak out usually before 80K), timing belt issues (repl on some years every 60k or 5 years), the turbo motor issues of sludge build up and more make the Corrado a no brainer when it comes to be more reliable. I will tell you that the Corrado interior trim is getting hard to find as is some body parts, but some of those issues are related to the fact the Corrado hasn't been around for a few years. Both vehicles are very nice driving, but they aren't in the same class type: the Corrado is a sports coupe; the Passat a mid-sized car in the states.

Well, I hope this helps, a car nut.
