Which catalytic converter usually goes bad first? Front or back one?
Anyone know which Catalytic converter usually goes bad first? We have a 86 Ford Ranger, when driving it boggs down (like it's out of gas) and there is a rattle like broken glass in a can coming from under the cab. There are 2 cat conv on this yr. The front has a 2 pipes going into it so getting an addapter is out of the question on a Sunday, if it's the back I can just get a pipe to replace it. My husband hasn't worked since Sept and we have to wait till our taxes come in to get a new exhaust system. But we still need to be able to get to and from until then.
It could be any one of them. Have your coil tested also. A bad coil could cause the cat to go bad by dumping raw gas into it and causing it to overheat the cat.
