Are 2002 subaru impreza wrx's reliable cars?
I am looking to buy a subaru impreza wrx wagon from a used car dealership and it has 173,000 miles on it but they gave me the carfax and it was a company leased vehicle and it was driven from michigan to ohio alot and sometimes to new york so i know alot of the miles are highway. There is no rust and the car is completely stock except for an AEM short ram intake and turbo xs blow off valve (which i find it ammusing a company would put a loud bov on a lease car) but anyway is this car usually reliable i dont plan to do anything to it other than an exhaust/downpipe/up-pipe and thats it becasue its going to be my daily driver.
I personally wouldn't consider any car with modifications AND 173,000 miles reliable. Lower mileage cars are typically very reliable, but I would be cautious of any car with that many miles, turbo or not, American or Japanese, etc. As someone else said, have a mechanic look it over. That's a lot of hard miles if it was driven as the modifications suggest. Plus, if the dealership is telling you that the carfax says it was mostly highway miles...then avoid them. Carfax reports don't say where the car goes, it just has any reported repairs and/or accidents and such, and the dealer is just trying to tell you what you want to hear. Every car I've seen at a used car lot has been "all highway miles" or "only driven on sundays to church by a little old lady" which is always automatically dismissed as a lie.
