So i managed to mess up the shifter in my 06 WRX and i need help before the dealer screws me sideways.?

When I was driving on the highway I went to go into third gear and then the shifter went crazy it had completely gone loose. I pulled over to the side and took apart my center console and saw that the shifter was out of the plastic socket which really wasn't the problem it was the plastic socket itself, it had come out of whatever it connects to and won't go back in ,at least not with brute force. I luckily had two wrenches in my car and i was able to put the shifter back in place and drive home with the plastic piece sitting where its supposed to but not secure. So alas, i reluctantly went to the dealer to see if they could fix this but they told me right off the bat it was going to cost big because they have to take the whole thing apart and labor cost blah blah. The guy wouldnt look at it, I mean I'm no suby tech but it looks pretty self explanatory to me from where i can see it, its just a plastic piece that wont go back into where it was before. Please help. Ayuda por favor.

I would go to a parts store and get a Haynes manual and it will pretty much tell you how to do anything to the car. If the parts store doesn't have one then you can go online and order one.
