Are single speed bicycles good training for road bike riding?
I have a 45/15 geared single speed bike, and I want to build my legs so I can be a better road bike rider.
That is pretty high gear ratio, good for you.
I've found riding single-speed and fixed-gear has helped develop my spinning form and climbing muscles. Especially at a ratio like that - you have no granny gear to bail you out on the hills and you have to keep pushing!
I usually ride my single or fixed for shorter rides (quick trips to the store or when I have little time) and more in the "off-season". In a few years it has really helped with my "real" road rides.
Riding single speed is really really fun too!
