1999 BMW 328I Sports Muffler?

Hi,

I bought this car with a sports silencer. I think it is suppose to have three mufflers (bottles, or boxes whatever they are called), but mine has only one and then it’s just a pipe till the end. It sounds pretty loud.

Is it true that performance actually goes down with this kind of setup (bcz engine needs a pressure to build up in the exhaust manifold) and the car actually consumes more gas (as mind does not give me more than 22 mpg, but I have heard that BMW's give around 30 mpg.

I will appreciate a detailed explanation and recommendation.

Typical mod from an idiot (they think the louder the faster). Yes, you got that right. Exhaust gases relies on pressure and gas speed to purge itself out. The bigger the hole the slower the speed therefore will cool the gas and stall in the tube. See if any other mods have been made, like a change on the intake. Does it looks factory made or home made? If so, more mods have been done. I will chuck that stupid Coffee can exhaust and get the proper one. BMW spent millions of Euros on research to give you a good performing car as a daily driver. With fuel efficiency and power.

Today cars are pretty powerful comparing back on the 80s and 70s for the given engine size. There is no much that you can do to boost performance without investing some serious $$$$$$$$$ if you want it done right. All have to be tune as a whole, like complete system. Once you change some, you affect other. Just from the start, if you want to increase performance, you will loose gas mileage. If you make the car lighter, you will hear the road/engine loud as hell while you drive. If you want a more exhaust flow, you need a bigger intake flow, therefore you need to change the valve timing, so a cam with more aggressive timing is need it, to match all that. Now the car will run hotter, you need a better radiator and a high flow water pump along with an oil cooler........... and hope for the best.
